First Year of Forging a Future for our Biosphere

Dear *|MMERGE5|*

Would you believe that we will be one year old as an official UNESCO World Biosphere Region on 11th June? Our first year has flown by, with other parts of the world now becoming the latest recruits - from Dublin to Kazakhstan. Please find a moment to mark our anniversary by getting outdoors in our world-class environment, or perhaps lighting a candle for us!

Its been a really active first year of life, with our birthday giving an opportunity to reflect on what we've already achieved, as well as focus on the big plans we have to inspire and pioneer a positive future for people and nature as an international demonstration area for living in greater harmony together.

Some highlights of our work so far include working with:
- City Parks and the University of Sussex and others - creating new wildflower areas for bee pollinators
- School children and the University of Brighton - developing a virtual Biosphere world using Minecraft to teach about our local water cycle
- Public, private and voluntary organisations - identifying the potential to create 'rain gardens' that help to reduce flooding impacts
- English and French Biosphere sites - bidding for EU funds to improve our water environment through better land management
- Visit Brighton to develop a 'Best of our Biosphere' guide for visitors and local people alike

Looking forward, we plan to take the projects highlighted above much further, if we are successful in securing new funding support from the grant bids that we have made, fingers crossed!

The theme of this month's bulletin is all about living better for the future (rather than resting on our laurels!). We take a look at what the rapidly expanding sector of 'Eco Technology' offers - as set out in the Bio Blog (below) by guest contributor Damian Tow of the EcoTechnology Show. Get along to this free show if you can at the Amex stadium on 11-12th June to find out much more!

Enjoy the summer sun and hopefully a bright future!

Window On
Our World:
EcoTechnology

Some innovative examples of 'ecotechnology' can be viewed in our Biosphere area, including:

~ Shoreham Port - solar PV arrays owned by Brighton Energy Co-op (see above)

~ Richardson's Yard, Brighton - re-use of shipping containers as homes & offices

~ 'Earthship', Stanmer - pioneering eco-house project

~ Glyndebourne Estate, near Lewes -
wind turbine supplying most of the estate's energy needs

Future Perfect?

A 'perfect storm' is brewing from our growing global population, increasing climate change and depleting natural resources.

We thus need to shift to technology that makes use of unlimited renewable resources and to better use materials through recycling and a 'circular economy' approach.

‘Eco Technology’ applies scientific solutions to environmental challenges, and can also transform our economies creating new jobs, and it's already happening  in our Biosphere (see left)!

The Eco Technology  Show on 11-12th June at the Amex Stadium is THE place to come and find out more for free for yourself!
