March 2015

"Treasure in them thar hills...!"

Dear *|MMERGE5|*

Treasure - what treasure?!?
And how come you didn't know anything about it before?

Not many people are aware of where the water in our taps comes from, an issue we wish to address since the groundwater lying within the chalk beneath our feet forms an indispensible yet fragile resource for us to survive and thrive here -  a form of "liquid gold" in fact! This hidden treasure is brought to the surface in our Bio Blog (below) by Dr Christopher Manning of the South Downs National Park Authority.

Meanwhile our Biosphere initiative is working with and for local children to awaken their interest in our water, through a new film animation and Minecraft virtual Biosphere world to explore and discover - check out our Minecraft video for a fly-through and tour underground! We launched this at the 'Bright Sparks' event of the Brighton Science Festival last month, and will be exhibiting it at the Brighton Festival in May with Australian artists 'Gauge'. It will be also be viewable at the Lewes Water Fair this Saturday. Then next weekend it's all about saltwater and marine mammals at the renowned WhaleFest weekend at the Brighton Centre.

So there's lots of things going on in the run-up to the Easter holidays - see our Events calendar (summary, left) - as well as out there in the natural world, as Spring starts to make a welcome return: find out what's waking up in our monthly nature calendar.

Enjoy coming alive with the Spring!

Window On
Our World:
Ground Water

By definition, ground water is rather hard to get at and experience!
However it is a marvel to behold where it emerges as pure clear water from springlines at the surface, places in our Biosphere

~ Lewes Winterbourne stream, flowing through Lewes Railway Land

~ Wellesbourne stream in central Brighton, buried beneath the 'Valley Gardens' for over a hundred years!

The Hidden Treasure Beneath Us

Out of sight, and to most people out of mind, a massive chalk sponge lies underground beneath the Downs as well as the city of Brighton & Hove itself – a giant natural reservoir that stores millions of litres of groundwater in the chalk block of our Biosphere from the River Adur in the west to the River Ouse in the east.

This groundwater chalk ‘aquifer’ is much more than a simple natural phenomenon however, rather it is an essential requirement of our daily existence here by providing
