Meet the Family! - getting the world view

Dear *|MMERGE5|*

Being an internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere World Biosphere Region means not only focussing on improving what makes us special here, but also looking beyond our local horizons to embrace the opportunity that being part of the global family offers.

Our Bio Blog this month (below right) explores what it means to be part of this community, both nationally and worldwide. Here in the UK we have recently met up with our counterparts in the UK's five other Biospheres - see 'WoW' section (below left) - for the first meeting of our wider network. At this we learnt of some inspiring examples of good practice, such as environmental art in the landscape, as well as sharing our experience - including our pioneering environmental education with local schools using our 'virtual Biosphere'.

Meanwhile internationally all 669 Biospheres across 120 countries now share a new global vision of "a world where people are conscious of their common future and interaction with our planet, and act collectively and responsibly to build thriving societies in harmony within the biosphere".

Here in our Biosphere, winter's darkness is well and truly with us now - a challenging season for nature, see our monthly 'Nature Now' diary - but this is also the best time for night-time stargazing (see last month's Bio Blog article for top tips).

And despite the chillier weather, there's still a range of eco-events to get involved in - both outdoors and inside: sneak a peak at our Biosphere Calendar (summary list, left) to find out more.

Stay warm ,and enjoy exploring!

Meet the Family!

Our Biosphere Region has been a proud member - #ProudToShare - of UNESCO’s global family of Biosphere Reserves for over two years now, part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves that connects communities who are pioneering a positive future for people and nature – today.

The World Network covers some exotic places certainly, but our Biosphere stands out as a rare example with a significant city.

We are now working closely with our sister
UK Biosphere Regions (see left), with wider connections to other international Biospheres as well as different types of UNESCO designations in the UK, all connected through a global mission.

Being a member of the UNESCO family offers unique opportunities…
