Reaping Autumn's Harvest
We hope that you've had a great summer, including getting outdoors in our new UNESCO World Biosphere area whilst the current settled warm weather endures.
Now that farmers have brought the harvest in and are preparing the land to sow the next crops, we too are turning our thoughts to how we "reap the harvest" of our labours as a newly-recognised world-class environment to bring improvements to the place that we love.
Providing information to people about where and how they can best enjoy our area is key. Beyond this regular e-newsletter for our 1500 local 'Friends', we are also developing a new "Best of Our Biosphere" autumncampaign with Visit Brighton as well as appearing on the new Growing Concerns series on Latest TV (5 pm on Sundays) - a 'Countryfile' for Sussex.
We encourage you to make the most of autumn's arrival too by going out and having fun foraging for the wild foods of this season, which are available all around and have come both early and in abundance this year following the benign weather and growing conditions. Have a look at our foraging tips below to get you started.
We hope you enjoy the 'food for free' on offer from our local nature, and please do encourage others to register their interest as a 'Friend of the Biosphere' like yourself.

Harvest your own free food by looking out for the following fruits available at the moment in our Biosphere area:
~ Blackberries– growing along footpaths and road verges ~ Sloes - plump berries in scrubby patches for gin
~ Elderberries - for wine/sauce
~ Apples - 'wilding' trees growing where a fruit's been tossed away
Remember - only pick fruits you are sure are safe to eat and leave some over for wildlife!
In this day and age, you can go in to a shop at any time and get food that has come from all over the world.
Or you can look out for food that is grown closer to home, or better still grow some in your garden or allotment plot.
But there is a ‘third way’, practiced by humans for many millennia and ripe for taking part in right now – foraging for wild food.
