Council provides £50 per family to support switch to reusable wipes.
Lewes District Council has partnered with a sustainable Newhaven company to launch an innovative voucher scheme that saves money for parents of young children and helps reduce waste.
In the first collaboration of its kind, the council and award-winning Cheeky Wipes – which specialises in reusable wipes and nappies – is opening the scheme to all parents in Lewes district with children under two-years-old or those expecting a baby.
These parents can redeem a voucher worth £50 towards the cost of Cheeky Wipes reusable wipes and cloth nappies, offering savings of £500 on equivalent disposables over two years.
Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, said the scheme also has huge environmental benefits.
“Billions of wet wipes are thrown away in this country every year, creating unnecessary waste or flushed away to end up polluting our sewers, rivers and seas,” she added.
“Disposable nappies are also one of the biggest factors in plastic waste globally. It is imperative we move from single-use to reusable alternatives, and I’m delighted this new scheme with our partner Cheeky Wipes allows local parents to make this switch – as well as saving money at the same time.”
Mother-of four Helen Rankin from Seaford, founded Cheeky Wipes in 2008 and the firm won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in 2021.
Cheeky Wipes estimates it has helped save more than 90 million single use sanitary products and 60 million packs of wipes from landfills since 2016.
Helen said: “We’re very excited to announce our recent partnership with Lewes District Council. Cheeky Wipes is all about finding sustainable swaps that are easy but also save parents money.
“We know from our local food hub in Newhaven that some parents are spending £30 monthly on wipes, which they could save by switching to our reusables.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with Lewes District Council to make a real difference for families in the local area, plus of course reducing waste too.”
Councillor James MacCleary, Leader of Lewes District Council and Newhaven councillor, said: “As a dad with two young children, I know very well the struggles that nappies and wipes bring. We all want to do what’s right to reduce our waste but that can be practically challenging and often expensive.
“That’s why I’m so excited to see this partnership. It will save people money and help our environment. I often tell people that there are so many interesting and innovative businesses we have operating here in Newhaven these days. Cheeky Wipes are a really good example and I hope local people will support them in the coming months and years.”
