Locals Support Independent Shops this Season

Residents across The Living Coast are being encouraged to support independent shops in their home towns this season.

Buying local has never meant so much to small businesses. This challenging year has forced many to close their doors and need to find alternative ways to reach customers whilst competing with larger online retailers. Shopping near your home can help our environment with fewer travel miles for shoppers and often shorter manufacturer-to-consumer journeys for independent retailers too, which can help improve transparency over how goods are produced.

Visit Lewes has joined forces with the Lewes Pound, Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes High Street Traders Association to run the Shop Independent at Christmas campaign with special free parking days.

Newhaven also celebrates the "quality and diversity" of the areas independent traders and, like Lewes there is are some shoppers incentives on offer Read more here.

Few places in the UK can boast as many small independent traders as Brighton's famous North Laines. The community Facebook page North Laines Independents celebrates the unique and independent traders in this shoppers paradise. Sadly, lockdown forced many of these businesses online, but here's a handy list of those that have been offering click and collect.

Planet Brighton has also been set up by a Hove resident who believes you can get just about everything you possibly need within a 3 mile radius of your home. The website showcases local shops, gathering thousands of products available in an easily searchable collection. All available for home delivery and all local to Brighton & Hove. Keeping small businesses afloat and bringing increased profits to the local community.

Brighton & Hove Food Partnership have also put together these great Christmas gift ideas all made with a big emphasis on local, sustainable and ethical food.

Visit Brighton's Never Normal campaign encourages residents and visitors to escape the mundanity of this year with a trip to the city and celebrates its free-thinking nature and unusual heritage buildings. "Welcome to Never Normal Brighton"
