The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere Welcomes Its First Youth Representatives

Meet our first ever Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere Youth Representatives! Amplifying youth voices across our region.

Big things are happening in The Living Coast! For the first time ever, two inspiring young people—Bodh Cullis and Zoe Gowers—have been chosen as youth representatives for our UNESCO Biosphere. Their mission? To connect communities with nature, protect our stunning landscapes, and make sure young voices are heard when it comes to the environment.

From Brighton’s beaches to the rolling South Downs, Bodh and Zoe are ready to bring fresh energy and ideas to local conservation efforts. This is a huge step forward for The Living Coast, proving that young people aren’t just the future of the planet—they’re leading the way right now.

Bodh and Zoe join a nationwide movement aimed at amplifying youth voices in environmental conservation through the UNESCO Biosphere Youth Network. In their roles, they will collaborate with community members, local partners, and stakeholders to promote conservation, education, and sustainable economic development within the Biosphere.

As part of their new role, they will take part in the UK & Ireland Biosphere Youth Forum on 27 March at the University of Brighton’s Wild House. This event will bring together young people from across the country to discuss environmental action and the future of our Biospheres. They will be traveling sustainably thanks to Brighton & Hove Buses sponsoring a bus pass for both representatives.

Meet The Living Coast’s First Youth Representatives

Bodh, with a background in teaching, is dedicated to promoting inclusive access to nature. They regularly lead outdoor classes, integrating natural world concepts into various subjects. Reflecting on this approach, Bodh shared:

“I enjoy sharing my students’ inquisitiveness, joy and excitement as we explore how the world around us works.”

As an avid surfer and sea swimmer, Zoe is committed to raising awareness about the importance of protecting our coastline. She aims to inspire urban residents to connect with the natural world, especially those with limited access to green spaces. Zoe expressed her motivation:

“I want to inspire others to connect with the natural world, especially those living in urban areas where access to green spaces can be challenging.”

Education Leaders Back the Youth Representatives

Jeremy Kerswell, Principal and CEO at Plumpton College, remarked:

“We are delighted that one of our students, Bodh, has been appointed to this significant role.”

He further noted the college’s commitment to inspiring future environmental leaders and fostering a sustainable future that connects people to nature.

Similarly, Professor Robin Banerjee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Global and Civic Engagement at the University of Sussex, commented:

“It’s fantastic that a Sussex student has been selected as one of the first youth representatives for The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere.”

He highlighted the university’s dedication to sustainability in teaching, research, and campus initiatives and expressed excitement about Zoe’s potential impact on the community.

A Bright Future for Our Biosphere

Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, emphasized the significance of these appointments:

“It’s fantastic to welcome our first youth representatives for The Living Coast Biosphere. Bodh and Zoe will be a vital link between young people and decision-makers.”

He underscored the importance of involving youth in shaping the future of the region’s unique landscape, which has received global recognition from UNESCO for its collaborative efforts in biodiversity conservation and improving access to nature.

With their passion and knowledge, Bodh and Zoe are set to make a real difference. The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere looks forward to the fresh perspectives and energy they will bring, helping to shape a sustainable and more inclusive future for the region.
